The Militia of the Immaculata (MI) is a worldwide evangelization movement founded by St. Maximilian Kolbe in 1917 that encourages total consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary as a means of personal conversion and sanctification, and of spiritual renewal of society. The MI movement is open to all Catholics over 7 years old — laity, clergy, and consecrated persons. As Marian missionary disciples, MI members employ prayer and self-sacrifice as the main tools in the spiritual battle for the victory of good over evil. They also engage in apostolic initiatives in various sectors of society, either individually or in groups, to give witness to the Lord and our Catholic Faith and to spread devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Militia of the Immaculata received its first official Church approval in 1922. Finally, on October 16, 1997, the MI was erected as an International Public Association of the Faithful by the Holy See. The MI International Center is headquartered in Rome, Italy. The Militia of the Immaculata-USA (MI-USA) is the official entity of the Association in the United States. It is listed as such in the Official Catholic Directory. The MI National Center is located within the Diocese of Peoria, Illinois, and this is the MI-USA website.

  • Please be advised that the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), a Catholic group not in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church, promotes the MI under the name “Militia Immaculatae of Traditional Observance,” but has no historical and canonical connection with the MI Movement founded by St. Maximilian Kolbe in 1917, nor authorization to do so.
  • Please know also that the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate (FFI) established and promote their own Marian association, the Mission of the Immaculate Mediatrix (MIM), attached to their religious institute. It may appear to parallel the structure and purpose of the Militia of the Immaculata founded by St. Maximilian Kolbe, but it is not associated with it.

Useful Instruments in Mary's Hands
"On earth, we see so many unhappy, misguided souls who do not even know the purpose of their life, who love many short-lived goods instead of the other good, God. Many of them are indifferent to the most sublime love. We want to introduce and increase to the maximum the glory of the Immaculata in these souls and we beseech her to make us useful tools in her immaculate and merciful hands, not to let us hamper her; to drive us even by force in case we were to refuse to obey her." (KW 1331)

Evil Spirit Attacks Souls Consecrated to Mary
"The spirit of evil undermines in a special way those who are consecrated to the Immaculata, because he wants to offend her at least through them. However, his attempts against souls faithfully consecrated always end up in even more ignominious defeat. Therefore, his impotent rage becomes even more violent." (KW 1331)

Imploring God's Grace through Prayer
"The appropriate means in the work of conversion and sanctification of souls may only be the grace of God, which one must implore with prayer. In fact, among the means, first we have the ejaculatory prayer to the Immaculata given during the manifestation of the miraculous medal: 'O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have resource to thee.'" (KW 1330)

Activity Under the Protection & Through Mary's Mediation
“The purpose of the MI is the commitment to the work of converting all together and each individually those who have need of conversion, and in the work of the sanctification of every soul who currently lives and will live in the future without exception. The specific feature that sets the MI apart from many other associations working for the salvation and sanctification of souls, is that the MI develops its activity under the protection and through the mediation of the Immaculata.” (KW 1330)

Mother of the Man-God
"Who is Mary, therefore, [Jesus'] Immaculate Mother? She is the Mother of the Man-God. If we lavishly venerate the mother of an illustrious personage, of a benefactor of humanity, how much veneration do we own the Mother of the Son of God? If a sovereign's mother has so much influence over her son, how much more powerful is the Mother of the Man-God?" (KW 1081)
